Users are finding what they are looking for online, study finds

By Mario Cywinski |

It seems the frustration of not being able to find what you are looking for on the Internet is gone, as the majority of Canadians online say they are satisfied with their search results, according to a new study.

Four in five online Canadians say they are receiving good results from the search engine they are using, an Ipsos Reid survey found. Furthermore, 66 per cent think these results are objective.

Interestingly, 75 per cent of surfers said they usually find what they are looking for on the first search results page, with only 29 per cent having to go through more than three pages.

Moving on to a more sour part of search engines, 62 per cent of online Canadians are skeptical of paid advertising, likely as a result of bad practices in the past.

"It wasn't that long ago when paid advertisements used to appear within the search results. The skepticism shown by online Canadians is probably a reflection of past tactics and the early frontiers of search marketing," said Mark Laver, author of the study.

However, it is not all bad for paid advertising, as 44 per cent of Canadians said they have visited a webpage that was shown on an ad.

"Ultimately, Internet search engines are performing extremely well. Not only do they get online Canadians where they desire to go very quickly, they are also perceived as providing excellent results," said Laver. "The measures search engines have taken to place advertisements away from regular search results is proving to be very pleasing for the online community and may change opinions of paid search advertising in the coming years."
