Sunday shopping coming soon in PEI

By CO Staff @canadaone |

PEI -- Get ready Islanders. Starting on December 24, 2010 retailers in the province will be able to open on Sundays.

Changes to the Retail Business Holidays Act will enable retail businesses to open at 12 noon on Sundays year round, except for designated holidays.

Businesses must remain closed on a designated holiday regardless of the day of the week on which these holidays fall. Currently, the designated retail holidays in the province are:

  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day
  • Good Friday
  • Islander Day
  • Labour Day
  • New Year's Day
  • Remembrance Day
  • Thanksgiving Day

Regardless of the day of the week on which these holidays fall, retail businesses are not permitted to be open on one of these days.

Since the first Sunday after the legislation takes affect is a designated holiday, Boxing Day, the first Sunday a retail business may open under the newly amended legislation will be Sunday, January 2, 2011, at 12 noon. Retailers will be allowed to be open on Monday, December 27.
