Can employees request their vacation pay be paid?

Expert: Howard Levitt

Duncan asked:

We are a federally regulated transportation company. May an employee request their vacation pay be paid to them apart from when they take vacation and if they are allowed to do this when must it be paid to them. I am hearing it must be paid immediately.

Howard Levitt answered:

That is not the case. As an employer, you are free to decide to pay vacation pay when it is customarily paid, i.e. when they take their vacation.
